I've seen a lot of questions and comments on the REALbasic mailing lists and forum about the HTMLViewer. Usually the questions center around perceived inadequacies in the control. Often people want to know why it doesn't handle things like browsing history, forward and back buttons, bookmarks, and printing. Truth be told, while the HTMLViewer doesn't handle these things for you, working with the control in REALbasic can give you a taste of just how complicated it is to write a good web browser in any language.
With that said, in this issue, we're going to create our own web browser. To be sure, it will have limited functionality, but if you've never used the HTMLViewer before, it will show you how to manage it in your own projects.
The Goal
We want to build a simple web browser. For our purposes in this project, we're not going to focus on the more "pro" browser features like tabbed browsing, a plug-in architecture, or custom stylesheets. But it will handle history and basic navigation.
