I am primarily a consultant and it generates a majority of my income. I have products also, and as part of my goals for the year I want to increase product sales. I know I need to do a better job of 'marketing' my products but since I know next to nothing about marketing, what do I do so I'm not wasting time and money?

I did the same thing that people looking for people like me do: I looked around, asked some questions and talked to some marketing consultants. I found a marketing consultant who works with small business owners like myself and together, we came up with a plan.

I've discovered that it helps to have someone other than the developer of the product making the marketing decisions. I'm an engineer by education and it's very difficult for me to write about my own products and services in 'marketing speak'. I know it's not dishonest but it's just not in my nature to say how great my stuff is when, in my mind at least, I have a list of a dozen things that I want to change or improve in the product. Patting yourself on the back is just a way to hurt your shoulder, right?
