Excerpt of article text...
It's very common to have a potential client ask me about my rates even before we start talking about their project. I hate it because it's a sensitive subject and some clients are looking solely at price. While I understand why they ask about price, I also think they do themselves a disservice.
I don't compete on price. I also know that I'm not the cheapest, nor most expensive, REALbasic developer around. But I also have multiple developers working for me and I can throw a lot of man hours at a large project because I have the bandwidth to do so. This means I have higher overhead because I have to hustle to keep them busy and when they're not busy I eat their salary. I also have to do taxes, save for our collective retirements, pay insurance, and so on.
I've also invested a considerable amount of time and money in research on tools, controls, and libraries that make my life easier from a development standpoint. This, in turn, makes my projects shorter because I've already learned how to use the tools in my toolbox.
