I remember as if it were yesterday talking to a pioneer in outsourcing software to developing countries. He told me of the problems he was having with his financial software because this country did not have a checking system. He had to teach the programmers how a checking system operated before they could write a working program. The lesson is:
A programmer must understand the user environment to be successful.
A second lesson I have learned through my own long years of experience is:
The interface must be easily understood (used) by the user.
This applies to all human interfaces. For example, some recent auto dashboards dangerously distract the driver when he wants to do something as simple as change the radio volume.
Based on these and other principles I have developed what is now named Print 4 Postcards over the last two years. The program provides the user with a window in which they can enter and edit styled text and place graphics such as clip art and pictures into a space that approximates the size of a postcard. Four copies of their design are printed in the four quadrants of a page in landscape orientation. An example use of the application could be to create monthly club meeting notices for mailing to the club members.
