Excerpt of article text...

In the last issue I wrote about my initial experiences developing TickerMenu in REALbasic. In this final part of the article, I'll cover marketing and other aspects of software development.

Experiences with eSellerate

There are of course many merchant services for developers, and I can't say which one is the best because I have not used them all. One of the features that drew me to eSellerate is that they have a plugin for REALbasic that allows the developer to implement eSellerate functionality within an application.

If you decide to use eSellerate, you will be required to sign an agreement with them. The last time I checked, the setup could not be accomplished simply by visiting their website. They require that you sign the agreement and return it to them by fax or scan, so it's not necessarily something you can accomplish in an afternoon.

Once your account is set up, you will have access to your account at the eSellerate site. Here you can create SKUs (products to be sold, with all their details) and connect them to various types of stores, such as web stores or stores embedded in your application (in this latter case, the user purchases your application through what is essentially a small, secure, custom browser inside your application). You can also create registration code sets that will issue codes to users automatically and will be the basis for verifying registration authenticity when needed. And of course you have access to your sales statistics.
