Excerpt of article text...
We now move on to MySQL, the popular, but somewhat controversial, open-source database recently purchased by Sun Microsystems.
MySQL
Like the other database servers we've looked at, MySQL works with Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. MySQL is available in two editions: Enterprise and Community. Pricing for Enterprise starts at $595 per year. The Community edition is free to use, but it's license is not all that easy to understand (see sidebar).
The current version of MySQL is 5.0.51a. As with all the databases we've looked at so far, OpenBase SQL has professional features such as:
SQL 92 support
Stored procedures
Encryption
REALbasic native plug-in
Terabyte databases
Backups
Indexing
Installation
The MySQL download for OS X is about 50MB. Installation on Mac OS X is incredibly easy and took less than a minute. Also included in the download is a Preference Pane that allows you to start and stop MySQL from System Preferences. Unfortunately, the preference pane is not fully compatible with OS X 10.5, so you need start MySQL from the Terminal (or set it to start during system startup).
