Excerpt of article text...

Last time we looked at FrontBase, a decent, free cross-platform database server. This time we'll be looking at PostgreSQL, one of the most powerful and free cross-platform database servers.

PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL (www.postgresql.org) is a full-featured database server that is available for Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows. It has a reputation for being difficult to install and use, but as we'll see, that reputation is completely unfounded.

Currently at version 8.2.5, PostgreSQL has many features you'd associate with a professional database server, including:

n SQL 92 support

n Stored procedures

n Encryption

n REALbasic native plug-in

n Terabyte databases

n Backups

n Indexing

Installation

The PostgreSQL download is about 25MB for Windows, 18MB for OS X.

Installation on WIndowsWindows XP took less than 5 minutes and was pretty easy. There were quite a few options to choose from, but I just went with the defaults and all was fine.

Unfortunately, the PostgreSQL site does not provide a download for Mac OS X, which is a real shame. Luckily, a developer, Marc Liyanage, has taken upon himself to create Mac OS X installers for PostgreSQL. The 8.2.5 version can be downloaded from here: http://www2.entropy.ch/download/pgsql-8.2.5.pkg.tar.gz
