A New Year

Last year was full of drama: my grandfather passing, my hospitalization with pancreatitis, my diagnosis of diabetes. We even delayed this issue to give me time to adjust to my new diabetic lifestyle. I sure hope 2007 is a little less exciting!

Health Update

I am making fantastic progress. My blood sugars are so under control my doctor took me off the insulin and onto an oral medication instead. My cholesterol has dropped over 200 points and my good cholesterol is increasing. I've lost over 30 pounds and I'm feeling incredible.

The secret is my new diet: I changed my eating habits immediately, switching to a low-fat, carb-controlled diet rich with healthy vegetables and minimal red meat. (I mostly eat chicken and fish with lots of tomatoes, zucchini, broccoli, mushroom, onions, squash, green peppers, eggplant, etc., often in a stir-fry or salad.)

I bought a fantastic kitchen scale (the Salter 1450 NutriWeigh) that not only measures the weight of foods, but displays their precise nutritional break-down. With that scale I am able to control--exactly--my intake of carbohydrates, saturated fat, cholesterol, and calories. Studying the scale's data quickly taught me which foods were healthy and which weren't. I can't recommend it highly enough.

In This Issue

For some reason we ended up with a bit of a math focus, with articles on the Fourier series and JC Cruz's exploration of the "drunken walk" model, but we balance those more advanced features with some newbie-oriented pieces on Bitwise Operations and my article on "The Secret Resource." I also wrote an unusual piece taking a look back at the progress REALbasic has made--that was inspired my my own experience at getting an old RB2.1 project to work in the latest release. And of course our columnists are back with neat articles on sorting, StyledText, and more. Enjoy!

End of article.
