Okay, you've created the perfect software program. Congratulations! (What, you mean you haven't? Okay, just play along...)
What you need now is to get your software out to the teeming masses. You've secured the web space to host your file, and maybe you've even designed the perfect web site to go with your program. It's time now to set up an installer to get the program from your web site to the user's computer.
Your software installer -- or installation scheme, to be more precise -- is one of the first impressions you make on the user. Installation should of course be easy, but it really needs to be more than just easy: it needs to be trustworthy.
A trustworthy installation makes the user feel secure that you're not scattering junk all over her hard drive. Most simple to moderate programs need only place a preference file in the user's Preferences folder; nearly everything else can (and should) be contained in the application package. When only one file (the application package) is placed on the user's hard drive -- and the user is aware of it -- the user will feel much more comfortable about installing and using the software.
