Recently I began using REALbasic 2005 for "real" work. Though I'd experimented with earlier releases, there's nothing like using software for real work to get you to truly understand the program. In the process, I began to realize the number of differences between the releases. Some are simple things like menu options having been moved or changed, while others are more fundamental. It occurred to me that many beginners who were just getting used to version 5.x are finding the transition to 2005 awkward and confusing. So here's a quick guide to the differences and changes between the programs. Note that this is not meant to be a comprehensive list, but a good introduction. For those of you just starting with 2005, seeing how RB5.x did things can be enlightening, and can demonstrate why RB2005 works the way it does.
Single Project vs. Browser Metaphor
The most obvious difference between earlier versions of REALbasic and 2005 is the "browser" metaphor the new version uses. Instead of a single project taking over the entire REALbasic interface, 2005 restricts each project to its own window (see Figures 1 and 2), finally allowing you to open more than one project at a time.
