Excerpt of article text...

Introduction

This is the second of six articles in which we are creating RSS Reader in REALbasic. In the previous article we talked a bit about what RSS feeds are and the kind of reader we will build to fetch and read them. We didn't get a chance to write any code in the last article, but that situation will change in this article as we implement adding, fetching, and parsing RSS feeds.

I urge you to download the project that accompanies this article and follow along there as you read here. Things will make more sense if you are able to put it all into context.

Adding An RSS Feed

Let's begin by implementing the ability to add an RSS feed to RSS Reader. The only piece of information we really need in order to add a new RSS feed is a URL for the feed. It is possible to discover the URL for an RSS feed automatically from a site's HTML (if the site has a feed and has placed the proper information about the feed in the HTML), but we won't attempt to implement automatic feed discovery right now. Instead, we will force our users to discover the RSS feed URL for themselves.
