Last issue, I wrote about some performance results for the REALbasic 5.5 database engine. For further comparison, this time we'll look at the performance of SQLitePluginPro (http://sqlabs.net/index.shtml) and the original REALbasic database engine. As you will see, not all databases are created equal. Hopefully, with the information here you will be able to decide how to best select a database engine for your REALbasic projects.
As I did last time, for the analysis we will look at creating tables, inserting data, deleting data, selecting data, and creating indexes. The times I refer to were generated on a PowerMac G4 Dual 1Ghz using a modified version of the test application from the last analysis. The test application was built using REALbasic 5.5.3. The results of tests against these database engines are summarized in Table 1.
REALbasic Database Engine (5.5 and newer)
These results were all discussed in the last column. They are included in the table for comparison purposes. You can download the test application that generated these results from the REALbasic Developer web site. Included in the table are the results for creating databases as virtual volumes (VV) or as folders. As you can see, the REALbasic 5.5 database engine is much faster when it creates databases as folders.
