Excerpt of article text...

REALbasic 5.5 provides the long-awaited, all-new native database engine. It has many, many new features that I will cover here. But first, some high-level features to drool over:

The REAL Database engine is now included with REALbasic Standard.

The new database is much more reliable than the old database. Database corruptions are a thing of the past.

Industry standard SQL is now used.

Built-in RowId generation.

Many more SQL functions.

Full index support

The old database format remains accessible and is now known as REALDatabaseOldFormat. The old format is maintained primarily to allow databases to be converted to the new format. The old format has not been changed and retains all the problems it has always had. There is really no reason to continue using it.

General Database Changes

The new database can store its information in a couple of ways. You can opt to have everything in a single file, although this method has a maximum database size of 2GB. Or, you can have the database stored in a folder as a lot of separate files. This provides no limit on the total database size, although each table has a maximum size of 2GB.
