Excerpt of article text...
Multi-user databases (also known as database servers) are used with applications that need to concurrently share data with more than one user at a time. When used with REALbasic, they allow you to build 2-tier client/server applications. For the most part, these are not the types of applications you'll find on VersionTracker.
Below is a list of many of the popular database servers, each with some specific comments. Note that all of these databases make use of the database features that are only included with REALbasic Professional.
4th Dimension
http://www.4d.com ($350+), plugin included with REALbasic Professional
4th Dimension is a professional-strength database server, which also includes tools to build a user interface. I have not used 4th Dimension for any projects.
Advantages
- Cross-platform (Mac/Windows)
- Trial version available
Disadvantages
- UI tools aren't needed if using REALbasic
FrontBase
http://www.frontbase.com (free to $1000+ depending on license), plugin available from FrontBase
