In the December 2002 issue, Macworld UK reviews REALbasic 4.5, awarding it a 4 star/8.5 rating. John Dixon writes in closing: "In terms of power, REALbasic is way ahead of programs such as Revolution and SuperCard, and is much easier to use than tools such as CodeWarrior for making robust commercial applications. It's a strong contender for wearing the mantle of 'programming for the rest of us' that used to belong to HyperCard." Awesome!

eCrypt 7.0 is out

The new features include: Added a BlowfishECB class (this replaces the old functions). Added a BlowfishCBC class which adds a CBC chained Blowfish encryption to the plugin. Added a TwofishECB class which adds a ECB unchained Twofish encryption to the plugin. Added a TwofishCBC class which adds a CBC chained Twofish encryption to the plugin. Added an IEncryptionAlgorithm Interface which BlowfishECB BlowfishCBC, TwofishECB, and TwofishCBC implement. Removed the old function based BlowFish ECB encryption and all the ByRef string referencing related to it. Added new example projects for the new algorithms. The ZStream class is now implemented with native MacOS calls rather than MSL calls, making it 35% smaller on Carbon and 50% smaller on PPC platforms. Fixed a bug with the ZStream that made it crash when used on OS 8.6. Fixed a minor memory leak in the ZStream constructor. The ZStream now implements the IStreamWriter and IStreamReader Interface. The ZStream now can take IStreamReader and IStreamWriter as a constructor parameter, which adds the ability to do in- memory compression and decompression.

Intelli Innovations, Inc. is pleased to release Barcode Producer 1.7, a new functionality update to its award-winning barcode generation software for Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, and Windows. This update adds higher quality text rendering for PICT and TIFF exports, a new Window menu, and support for printing to Dymo LabelWriter printers.

Rendezvous in REALbasic

Version 2.8a14 of the MBS REALbasic plugin features a new class for using Apple's Rendezvous network service for registering, browsing, and resolving local network services. The Rendezvous plugin is sold as part of the big MBS Plugin Collection, which extends REALbasic with more than 3000 functions.

IntelliMerge 3.0.1

Intelli Innovations, Inc. released IntelliMerge 3.0.1, a major upgrade to its desktop business communication software for Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X. Designed specifically to simplify and automate business email communication needs, IntelliMerge includes a message editor, customer database system, and email delivery program in a single, integrated solution. Version 3.0.1 brings Mac OS X 10.2.3 compatibility to IntelliMerge, with most issues related to the text import feature. It also adds support for sorting custom fields in the Recipient Browser.

REALbasic Internet Configuration

A new version of REALbasic Internet Config (RIC) has been released. The most important change is that it is now Carbon compatible (MacOS X 10.0.2 or newer) and works in RB 3.x or newer. RIC is an Internet Configuration System for REALbasic developers . It supports most of the features that are available through Internet Config 2.x by 'Quinn' and Peter Lewis.

Passenger 2.2 final is now available. The new version focuses on support for 10.2 Server but also offers greater flexibility in formulations of usernames, short names, passwords, and many other small enhancements. The upgrade is free to registered users of Passenger 1.0 and higher.

The La Jolla Underground is pleased to announce the immediate availability of See No Evil 1.1. See No Evil hides your screen with a click of the mouse or with a user-configured hotkey. See No Evil can also hide all applications but the Finder.

Luc Thomaere has released an open source Calendar Class to use in your REALbasic projects. It is based on the canvas class and is compatible with Mac OS 9.x, Mac OS X, and Windows. The download is accompanied by a sample project to demonstrate the power of the calendar class. As it is open source, you can use it, learn from it, and change it as you like.

Satori Publishing has released "RB Source Code Printer", an easy-to-use development utility that generates fantastic hard-copy printouts of your REALbasic projects. It automatically generates a complete Table of Contents listing every form, window, and class in your project, as well as an alphabetized Index listing every Subroutine and Function in your project.

Counsell.net is pleased to announce the release of My Address Book v1.0.1. This is an initial release that allows information from Apple's Address Book for OSX 10.2 to be uploaded to your MySQL database. Creation of a data active web page written in PHP is also included in the application.

We have just released another internal REALbasic, cross-platform ODBC database client application called "Vincent" that will be used by scientists at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and other scientific organizations around Australia. This REALbasic/Sybase database records medical details for members of families involved in a large BiPolar study (manic depression).

Pyramid Designs, a software development firm, announces an update to FTP Suite, a set of classes and code modules that allows FTP operations to be implemented in REALbasic applications.

SelectColorBevel

SelectColorBevel is a control that lets users select a color that a program can use for something, such as keyword colors or backgrounds. It displays a BevelButton with a rectangle in the middle that shows the currently selected color. When the user selects it, the standard Mac OS Color Picker is displayed and the user can select a new color. The ColorChanged event fires when the user selects a new color, and the programmer can then utilize that color in whatever way is needed.

EasyPalette is a set of REALbasic classes that makes it fast and easy to add cross platform, tearoff, floating palettes to your REALbasic project. The palette windows can contain grid style selection palettes of the type commonly used to select colors, patterns, line widths, arrow styles, "tools," and objects. In fact, almost any kind of data that needs to be displayed and selected in a grid can be used with easyPalette. The easyPalette API is very simple, involving in many cases only a few calls to create the palette, handle the mouseDown, mouseDrag and mouseUp events, and then get the results. easyPalette seamlessly handles everything from the moment your user clicks on a palette popup button (or other control) until they release - including the tearoff action if required. The example projects show various ways to draw the palette and handle the palette selection feedback, and you can modify these or design your own.
