This Month's Challenge

Difficulty Level: Beginner-Intermediate

Last month we challenged your design skills with the interface to a simple Rock-Paper-Scissors game. This month we get a little more in-depth. I was going through some old games on my system and found a little game called "Pong." This is probably the most over-done game in existence... hundreds of unique versions are written by incoming freshmen on their TI-83 calculators at high schools across the United States. I decided, who can't make a Pong game in REALbasic? It doesn't necessarily require graphics skills; it can be done in an editfield if absolutely necessary. To me, the challenge won't so much be the code that runs the game, but the human interface you create for it. Ultimately I'm most interested in how creative you are at designing this game. The concept of Pong is simple: in a square or rectangular playing area a ball is bounced against three walls and a "paddle" that the player controls. Since the paddle is a good deal smaller than the other three walls the player's objective is to move the paddle left or right (or, alternatively, up and down -- depending on how you have your board designed) in order to bounce the ball off of it. Scoring is simple as well: every time the ball hits the wall opposite the paddle one or two points are added. The focus for this challenge is on creativity and playability.
